OpenBarbell is a one of a kind device designed to lower the barrier to entry to VBT (Velocity Based Training). It measures both peak and average velocity, duration of lift, ROM (range of motion), rest time between sets, logs up to 100 reps, and much more.

OpenBarbell is the worlds first:

High accuracy

Low cost

Open source

Bluetooth capable

Hand made

App AND device controlled

Pocket sized

Draw string velocity measuring device.

Using the device is simple!

All of the functionality mentioned above can be utilized directly from the screen on the device. We’re also working hard on an open source app that we’ll launch later this spring that will unleash even more possibilities!

Before you buy, make sure you check out our Frequently Asked Questions for things you may want to know before purchase, and please go over to our blog and read our Open Letter About OpenBarbell. Every single device is unique, as it is hand made in Seattle, Washington by the Squats & Science Labs co-founders.

By the time you receive your device there will be a complete user manual online at the following location: The user manual will cover all the topics you would need to know, including detailed user instructions, how to access Inverted Mode, Oly Mode, and Power Mode, as well as how to upload your own firmware and modify the open source app! Once you own a device you’ll be part of an exclusive club that we hope will remain engaged for years to come. That’s why we’ve put together an OpenBarbell Owners Forum for you to post questions, cool stuff you’ve been doing with the device, ask for help with your training, etc.

If you’re out of luck and there’s no stock left, add yourself to our OpenBarbell V1.0 waitlist. The members of this list will be who we contact first when refurbs, returns and demo units become available!

    (verified owner):

I purchased Squats&Science’s OpenBarbell V1.0 unit on pre-release day, and received it on Thursday, March 10th, 2016 (I live in Toronto, hence the delay).

I’ve used it for 2 sessions so far, consisting of Squats, Standing Overhead Press, Bench Press, and Deadlift, and I am extremely happy with the unit.

I’ll throw in the caveat that I am not a very strong lifter. My current lifts are Squat/Bench/Deadlift 350/240/420 (lbs).

    Build Quality:

To me, it appears to be very solidly built. Nothing seems fragile, but I wouldn’t recommend dropping any plates on it! It uses kevlar string with a tether on the end (both replaceable *if* it does break), which is easy to wrap around your barbell. The display is clear and it will turn off when not in use to conserve battery life. There are 4 magnets on the bottom in which you can anchor the OpenBarbell unit to a plate, or if you’d like, the top of a squat rack – yes, it can be used upside down.

    Ease of Use:

To me, it’s very easy to use. Simply anchor the OpenBarbell unit to a 5lbs plate, pull the kevlar string and wrap it around your barbell, turn on the unit, and lift heavy!

In the 4 lifts that I’ve completed so far, it has not over or under counted any reps, and seems to be very reliable. I also record all of my worksets and do a video review.

After your set is completed, you can scroll back to see the speed of each rep, measured in meters per second. I personally go through each rep and write down the speed, and then review the data accordingly.

    Future Applications?

There is a bluetooth 2.0 module built in, and I believe the wonderful people at Squats&Science are working on an iPhone & Android app which I hope would be able to automatically log the speed on each rep 🙂

    Other Features:

There are other features such as “power mode”, but I haven’t experimented with it. You can also change it to “inverted mode” and have the unit hang from your squat rack instead.

This is my first velocity based device that I’ve purchased. From my understanding, it is as reliable as units that are well over $2,000. For the quality, the price, the RELIABILITY of the OpenBarbell V 1.0, I believe this is one of the best products you can purchase (or build yourself), to aid in your training.

I am very happy with it, and I can’t wait to lift again, just so that I can collect more data.

    Thanks for reading.
